Why did my CAS Number Import Terminate?
When updating the CAS number list in Chem Codes.xls, ensure that there are no empty cells or duplicate entries in the Chem Code columns. Then, run CAS number update from dbUpdate.
How do I get different numbers of decimal places for the same test?
On the test registration page, under Numeric Test Setup, enter a minimum value for the test, the precision of the test and in the significant figures table enter the range and number of significant figures/decimal places.
Does Lims1 prompt users to change their password periodically?
Lims1 currently does not have the facility to prompt users to changes their passwords.
How secure is Lims1?
The security of any application depends on the security of the working environment. The security of Lims1 depends more on how the DB Administrator has protected the database. Lims1 has user passwords, these are used for identifying users and their privileges within the system.
What should I do when the ‘MadExcept’ error message form pops up?
While in many cases Lims1 will remain in a stable condition after ‘MadExcept’ catches an error, it is recommended that the user selects ‘Continue’ in the ‘MadExcept’ dialog then closes down and restarts Lims1.
Outlook is installed but I get the message ‘Microsoft Outlook Client not found’.
This message is most likely going to occur when multiple Email Clients are installed on the computer and an Email Client other than Outlook has been assigned as the default program for Emails. The issue can be resolved by assigning Outlook as the default progam. To set Outlook as the default, from the Tools menu in Outlook, click Options, click the Other tab then under General, select the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar check box. Outlook can also be set as the default program from Internet Explorer or Control Panel.
I get the following error when I attempt to send emails from Lims1…
Failed to logon. The following error has occurred:
TSession.Logon has raised the following exception:
The logon did not succeed, either because one or more of the logon-parameters were invalid
or because there were too many sessions open already. (-2147221231)
This error might be reported if either Outlook is not installed or when Outlook is not assigned as the default program for Emails. The issue should be resolved by installing Outlook where applicable or assigning Outlook as the default progam. To set Outlook as the default, from the Tools menu in Outlook, click Options, click the Other tab then under General, select the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar check box. Outlook can also be set as the default program from Internet Explorer or Control Panel.
What needs to be considered if moving to a new Operating System or Environment?
- Lims1 is a 32-bit Windows Client/Server-based suite of executables. We are currently developing and testing a 64 bit version of Lims1. Due to a number of complexities we are not in a position to provide an anticipated release date.
- Lims1 Version 9 & 10 are compatible with MS SQL Server Version 2008, 2008R2, 2012 and 2014. For other configurations please contact LTech Technical Support.
- All versions of Lims1 V9.3 & 10.0 are compatible with the 32-bit versions of Microsoft Office 2003 to 2013 but for the 64-bit version of Office 2013, RwEasyMAPI64.exe version 7.0 or above must be registered so that Lims1 can communicate with Outlook. If you are looking to install Microsoft Office 2016, a version later than Lims1 V9.3.13.2447 or Lims1 V10.0.7.2448 is required and for the 64-bit version of Office 2016, RwEasyMAPI64.exe version 7.1.4.12 or above must be registered. If customers depend on Outlook and Excel, they must thoroughly test the upgraded versions with Lims1 before rolling them out to the production environment.
- We have found some issues with 32-bit and 64-bit Citrix and Terminal Services execution environments. Specifically, saving/restoring user Registry settings, accessing printers and using the correct Locale. The issues seem to be inconsistent and depend on the Client’s specific installation.
- Lims1 uses a serial port to connect a balance to some applications. This connection may be difficult to establish in Citrix, Terminal Services and virtual ( App-V ) environments.
- LTech Customers are expected to test Lims1 in the new environment before deployment.
What should I do if I have already installed a version of Microsoft Office and want to install a different version in its place?
You must Uninstall the current version of Office from the Control Panel to ensure that all files associated with that version of Office have been removed. You should then be able to successfully install your preferred version of Office.
I having been getting ‘Query timeout expired’ errors lately, what might be causing this?
It may be due the Recovey Model you are using and/or the size of the database Transaction Log file.
SQL Server provides for 3 Recovery Models for a database. Follow this link for an explanation of the Recovery Models and their advantages/disadvantages.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa173531(v=sql.80).aspx
You can determine the Recovery Model for your database from the Database Properties, Options menu. If you are using an Express version of SQL Server you may find that Simple provides you with adequate cover. If you are experiencing query timeouts on a regular basis, check the Recovery Model setting and change to Simple. This should provide adequate protection between backups.
Always backup on a regular basis. We recommend backing up on a daily basis.
You should also check the size of the Transaction Log file for the database and consider Shrinking the Log file where appropriate. Follow this link for an explanation of how to Shrink a file.

My Lims1 applications seem to run slower from time to time.
Check that the Auto Close option on your LIMSDB, ACCOUNTSDB and HISTORYDB databases is set to FALSE. Resources are assigned when a database is opened by SQL Server so that they are ready and waiting when connections are made to the database. If the Auto Close option is set to TRUE, SQL Server releases all of these resources back to the server when the last user disconnects from the database. If the database has been closed, then the resources have to be re-assigned the next time a connection is made to the database. The server makes the connection wait while the processes are re-assigned and this can make the system seem slower.
I am having performance issues with Excel and Word 2013.
There is a known issue with Microsoft Office 2013 products (refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2768648).
The symptoms reported on the Microsoft website are…
When you use Microsoft Office 2013 programs, you may notice that visual features differ from one computer to another. For example, on one computer, you may see animations in Excel when you scroll through a worksheet on one computer. However, on another computer, you do not see the same animations.
Additionally, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms that reduce the functionality of an Office program:
An Office program is blurry.
Your screen flickers or flashes.
An Office program is either mostly all white or all black.
Text in your document is not displayed well.
Your Office program crashes.
The performance of an Office program (other than startup and shut down) is reduced.
In Microsoft Lync, there may be video delays or slowness when you are on a video call.
The suggested cause is that you may have a video configuration on your computer that is incompatible with the Office 2013 feature set that is responsible for displaying the application and for animations in the application.
The suggested solution is to Update your video driver and if this doesn’t work, Disable the hardware graphics accelertation option.
What causes a Communication Link Failure error?
This error can occur because the computer has gone to sleep. If you are using a laptop (and it is allowed / possible), set the ‘Put Computer to Sleep’ Power Option to ‘Never’.
I created a DSN on my computer but KIWI can’t find it. What would be the reason for this?
KIWI is a 32-bit application that runs in a Windows environment. It relies on a 32-bit ODBC data provider for its database connectivity so the 32-bit DSN must be set up as prerequisite step of the KIWI installation. On a typical 64-bit Windows operating system, both 64-bit and 32-bit ODBC data providers exist in the same instance. Under most circumstances, the 64-bit version ODBC is set to default. As KIWI only works with 32-bit ODBC, any DSN created using the 64-bit ODBC Data Source Administrator will not be compatible with KIWI. Users must create a 32-bit ODBC DSN using the 32-bit ODBC Data Source Administrator. If a shortcut to the 32-bit ODBC can’t be found from your Windows Control Panel, it can be located in:
%WINDOWS%\SysWOW64\ODBCAD32.exe
It is recommended that a shortcut to ODBCAD32.exe is created on the desktop for future DSN management.
My KIWI application worked fine on 64-bit Windows Server 2008, why does it keep stopping now that it is running on 64-bit Windows Server 2008R2?
There are some known 32-bit ODBC driver issues with 64-bit Windows Server 2008R2 (ODBC driver version 6.1.7600.xxxxx). Earlier 64-bit Windows Server versions are less likely to be affected. KIWI performance under 64-bit Windows Server 2012/2012R2 (ODBC driver version 6.2.xxxx.xxxxx or above) is currently being tested and so far LTech has not detected issues similar to those reported in Windows Server 2008R2.
LTech has not received any reports of ODBC driver related issues in 32-bit Windows environments, including both Server and PC versions of Windows.
The Batch Merge & Email Certificates option in my Reports menu is disabled.
This feature relies on the availability of the third-party, ‘PDF Tool Kit’ server (‘pdftk.exe’ & ‘libiconv2.dll’ files) in the …\LimsOne\bin folder. The Batch Merge & Email Certificates menu item is disabled if ‘pdftk.exe’ is not found in the \LimsOne \bin folder. To comply with the Licence Agreement, the free version of the ‘PDF Tool Kit’ server must be installed on each workstation that is to be used to generate Merged Certificates. Once it has been installed on a workstation, the ‘pdftk.exe’ & ‘libiconv2.dll’ files can then be copied from the \PDFtk\bin folder to the \LimsOne \bin folder. The Batch Merge & Email Certificates menu item will be enabled the next time Lims1 is opened after the files have been copied to the \LimsOne \bin folder.
When I generate a PDF Report on my computer, the Font Style and Font Size looks slightly different to the Font Style and Font Size of the same PDF Report when it is generated on a different computer.
If this behaviour is observed, go to Control Panel, select ‘Appearance and Personalization’ then ‘Display’ on each computer. It is most likely that the Display setting selected on each computer is different, e.g. one is set to ‘Smaller – 100%’ and the other is set to ‘Medium – 125% (default)’. The Font Style and Font Size can be standardised by selecting the same Display setting on all computers.
I accidentally deleted the Registration Date of a job and now I can’t see the job on my Registration List.
You can add the Registration Date back to a job using the following steps…
Select Search Reg. Ref. from the Filter/Search menu.
Enter the Job Ref for the job with the missing Registration Date.
When the job is located, the following message will be displayed. – “The registration is not in the currently displayed view. Do you wish to filter the database to locate this registration?”
Press Yes when prompted.
The job with the missing Registration Date should now be displayed.
Edit the job, re-assign the Registration Date and save the job.
Select Restore Default Filters.
The job should now be displayed on the Registration List.
I get a ‘System Error. Code:5. Access is denied’ error when I press the F8 key to create a new PDF Certificate.
This probably means that Lims1 can not perform create/read/delete tasks in the folder currently set as the TempDirectory. To resolve this, assign a folder with full permissions as the Temp folder. Contact LTech Australia for additional information.
Is Lims1 compatible with Office 2016?
The latest versions of Lims1 V9.3 and V10.0 are compatible with Office 2016 but versions before Lims1 V9.3.13.2447 & Lims1 V10.0.7.2448 are not expected to be compatible with Office 2016. If the 64-bit version of Office 2016 is installed, RwEasyMAPI64.exe version 7.1.4.12 or above must be registered so that Lims1 can communicate with Outlook.
If you are looking at updating workstations and/or your Office products, please contact LTech for further information.
More FAQs are coming soon. In the meantime, please email us your questions to sales@lims1.com.
